Evansville's Free Saturday 5K Parkruns Draw Steady Crowds
Evansville's free Saturday 5K events draw steady crowds across multiple city parks this summer.
How we reported this
The Evansville parkrun at Wesselman Woods recorded 187 finishers on the July 4 course.
More residents turned to these timed runs after local wellness programs expanded trail access last spring. City data shows park visits rose 22 percent from May through June compared with the prior year. The events cost nothing to join and require only advance online registration.
Key spots across town
One reliable option sits inside Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve on Weinbach Avenue in the East Side. Runners follow a flat 5K loop that starts at the main parking lot and stays shaded for much of the route. A second event operates at Burdette Park on the West Side, where the course uses the outer trail that borders the golf course and returns along the creek path. Both locations open at 7:45 a.m. for check-in and begin the run at 8 a.m. sharp each Saturday.
The Evansville Parks and Recreation Department added lighting to the Burdette trail in April 2025, allowing safer winter sessions. Volunteers from the local running club handle timing and course setup at both parks.
Numbers and next steps
Since the first Evansville parkrun in March 2024, participants have logged more than 4,500 finishes across the two sites. Average completion times sit near 28 minutes for the full 5K. Runners can view personal results on the parkrun website the same afternoon.
Sign up at parkrun.com before arriving. Wear a visible number and carry water for the July heat. New runners can walk the course or pair with a friend. Check the Evansville Parks and Recreation calendar each Thursday for any weather changes.
